Westwood Preschool is set across two rooms, each with their own distinct set-up.
Our youngest learners begin as Caterpillars, taking their first steps towards independence. Then they spread their wings and become Butterflies, ready to take flight into ‘big school’!

Caterpillars is where our little ones aged 2-3 years begin their journey. The focus is all about settling in, learning routines, and developing those all-important learning-to-learn skills:
Learning through play
Independence
Being with others
Sharing
“My little boy attends the Caterpillars classroom. Right from the start Rachel and the team have been fantastic with helping him settle and find his feet.”
Preschool Parent
“The Caterpillars staff are so loving and caring towards the children - another reason I was happy for him to attend when he's still so little. I knew they would welcome him with open arms and to me that side is very important.”

Butterflies is for the 3-4-year-olds who will be starting ‘big school’ the following September. As the year progresses, our little Butterflies are given invaluable skills to support their successful transition into First School, such as:
Early phonics & numeracy
Increased time in listening groups
Following rules and structure
Personal independence
Fine motor skills, including pencil control
… all while having lots of fun!
“The staff in the Butterflies class are great - so caring and planning some great activities. The consistency throughout hasn't gone unnoticed and I cannot recommend the preschool enough!”

Our little learners are encouraged to play together and share, and mealtimes are always a great opportunity for socialising. Many of our graduates form friendships that last a lifetime!
Once in Reception, the intake is divided between Class 1 and Class 2. We work closely with the Early Years Lead in Westwood First School to ensure a smooth transition into Reception. We can advise them on friendship groups and connections to help your child move into ‘big school’ with the children they have closely bonded with.
